Women, Gender and the Politics of Science The
14th Annual Conference on Women and Gender Studies and Feminist Theories of
The NCJW Women Studies Forum (WSF) at Tel -Aviv University,
1-2 February
2006, >gender, science, scientific practices and science >policies. > >Over
the last two decades the notion of science as >objective, 'pure', >universal
and available to all, has been challenged in >and from, different >fields
of knowledge and investigation, not least in >feminist historiography >and
feminist philosophy of science. The work of Evelyn >Fox-Keller, Sandra >Harding
(a keynote speaker at the conference), Londa >Schiebinger, Sarah >Hardy
and others, has opened up an ongoing debate on >the relationship >between
practices and trajectories within and of, the >development of >scientific
research, the marginalization of women in >scientific work, and >the
allocation of resources to fields of science, an >allocation that should >encourage
greater and more gender-balanced scientific >activity which would >include
more work by, for and about women. Such >reallocation, it has been >argued,
would make for a more democratized, more >culture - and society - >oriented
science. > >The conference seeks to address these and related >issues. > >We
particularly aim to bring together and, perhaps, >bridge differences of >opinion
and approach between practicing scientists >from different fields >and
practitioners of the philosophy and history of >science, cultural >studies
and feminist criticism. We have a particular >stake in encouraging >such
dialogue. > >We welcome papers on different aspects of Women & >Science,
including (but >not restricted to) the following subjects: > >A.
Women and Science Histories and Practices: > > 1.. Women's participation
in the sciences - >histories: What was women's >status in the various
sciences from the eighteenth >century? How may their >historic and
almost universal exclusion from the >sciences be explained? > >
2.. Feminism, past and present, and the question of >science > >
3.. Gender, science and empires: How did colonialism >and the development >of
'race' and ideas on gender evolve together during >the age of >imperialism,
and how have colonialism and racism >become the subject of >criticism
with respect to the development of science? > >B. The Gender of Science > >
1.. Is scientific research in specific fields >gender-blind, or has it >been
biased by notions and beliefs about gender? > > 2.. Do women do different
science? Women scientists >and scientific >practices - present experiences
and projects. > >C. Gender and Policies in the Development of Science: >Issues
and Challenges > > 1.. Science policies and the allocation and >distribution
of costs and >benefits in Israel and elsewhere. > > 2.. Is introducing
gender into science changing the >agendas and >practices of science? > >Please

FECONDAZIONE
all'estero.
